Election Deepfake Pilot: Scope, Review and Platform Action

The Electoral Commission launched a pilot to identify misleading political audio and video around the May 2026 elections. Its launch and findings describe a defined monitoring exercise rather than comprehensive detection of all deceptive content.

Election deepfake pilot: geographic and time limits

The Commission’s announcement describes an April-to-June pilot covering England, Scotland and Wales, where elections took place in May 2026. Northern Ireland was not included in that phase. The monitoring targeted content intended to mislead about the electoral process or falsely depict candidates, such as a purported withdrawal announcement. This is a defined pilot scope, not proof of full coverage of all UK elections.

Human review before action

The launch document says potential deepfakes detected by the tools would be reviewed by a human analyst before action. The Commission was not itself removing content, although it could request removal from platforms where material raised serious concerns. Detection, review and a platform’s response are separate steps; identifying an item does not establish that every related post was removed.

Read the later findings with the same limits

The Commission’s published account says the tools processed around three million posts, a subset was reviewed by people, and 219 political deepfakes were identified. It says 15 posts met its electoral-integrity risk threshold. Those figures describe the exercise and its thresholds, rather than the total number of deepfakes online or a measure of their effect on voting behaviour.
