LSE’s 2026 snapshot places data-centre emissions among developing areas of climate litigation. A news report discusses individual disputes, including a UK planning challenge, which need to be read with their actual procedural status.
Datacentre climate litigation within the wider report
The LSE publication focuses on 2025 and developments through May 2026. Its cumulative total of more than 3,600 cases concerns climate litigation generally since 1986, not thousands of data-centre lawsuits. It identifies emissions from powering large data centres as a possible area for a further wave of cases.

A reported UK challenge is not a universal ban
The Guardian describes a Buckinghamshire dispute in which campaigners challenged a planning decision and the government subsequently accepted procedural flaws before the claim was dropped. The report distinguishes changes achieved through litigation from a final favourable judgment. It does not establish that every UK data centre is unlawful or that all projects have been halted.

Policy commitments and litigation outcomes are different
The Data Centre Covenant discusses environmental performance, community benefits and conditions for strategic government support. That policy document is not a court decision resolving a particular claim. Assessing a case requires its facts, applicable process and outcome; broad global trends should not be substituted for those details.
