Adopting an ambient scribe involves decisions about the whole clinical workflow as well as the software. NHS England’s deployment and professional guidance describe complementary responsibilities for organisations, suppliers and staff.
AI scribe safety starts before deployment
The professional guidance says staff should establish whether a product has been approved by their organisation and understand the policies governing its use. If suitable procedures are not yet in place, it advises speaking with the relevant IT, clinical safety or information governance team. An individual clinician’s interest in a tool is therefore separate from organisational approval to use it.

Assess the product and the proposed use
NHS England’s deployment guidance addresses clinical safety documentation, data protection assessment, supplier evidence and regulatory compliance where applicable. It recommends involving information governance and cyber security support early. It also warns that flexible generative systems can produce outputs beyond their intended purpose, making the specific functionality and safeguards important parts of an assessment.

Continue oversight after introduction
The guidance calls for user training and monitoring of performance, including discrepancies and potential bias. Staff still need to review generated notes, and safety concerns need appropriate reporting through organisational processes. A pilot does not remove the compliance requirements described by NHS England. These documents provide an England-specific framework for considering adoption; they do not certify every available product or replace a local assessment.
