Google Nuclear Power Contract: Finland’s Data-Centre Expansion

Google’s announced investment in Finnish infrastructure includes a long-term electricity agreement with Fortum. The arrangement concerns Finland and the Loviisa plant; it is not evidence of a new UK nuclear project.

Google nuclear power agreement with Fortum

Fortum’s September explanation describes a 22-year power purchase agreement under which Google contracts up to half of the generation capacity of the Loviisa plant. Fortum says that the agreement provides economic certainty for extending the plant’s lifetime and increasing its output through 2050. This is the company’s explanation of the commercial arrangement and intended benefits.

Infrastructure investment is a separate announced plan

The BBC reports an announced €13 billion investment package for Google’s infrastructure in Finland, including new data centres and expansion of an existing site. An announced construction and investment programme should be distinguished from facilities that have already been completed. It also should not be described as the purchase price of the nuclear plant or of the electricity contract.

Distinguish existing generation from possible new projects

Fortum describes the agreement as supporting the life extension of an existing plant and says the partnership could be a first step towards new nuclear power in Finland. That possible later development is distinct from an approved or completed new reactor. The cited sources do not establish a guaranteed change in UK household tariffs or the outcome of unrelated nuclear legislation elsewhere in Europe.
