AI can help refine an application, but an employer still needs an accurate account of the applicant’s own experience. Official UK guidance distinguishes useful preparation from submitting generic or misleading answers.
AI job applications must represent the applicant
The Civil Service says applications should explain the candidate’s own skills, achievements and motivation. Its guidance allows AI to help refine ideas, research public information and check spelling or clarity. It does not allow applicants to inflate their experience or copy generic responses into an application. Those are the Civil Service’s stated recruitment rules; applicants should check the rules of each employer rather than assume one policy applies everywhere.

Use editing support without losing the detail
JobHelp describes useful tasks such as improving CV structure, checking grammar, refining a covering letter and practising interview questions. It also tells applicants to check and personalise suggestions. A practical approach is to draft an example from real experience, use the tool to make the explanation clearer, then check that every achievement and responsibility remains accurate. Sending more applications does not remove the need for that review.

Preparation and live assessment are different
The Civil Service permits preparation such as generating mock questions, while prohibiting AI-generated responses during interviews and use during live assessments. JobHelp also advises against using AI during an online interview and warns that employers may reject inappropriate use. Before submitting, read the vacancy instructions and make sure you could explain every example without an assistant. AI output should support preparation rather than become a substitute for evidence of ability.
